July 13, 2000 - Tom Interviews Al Lowe
Tom King: Hello, Al. Thanks for taking the time to help out by doing the LSL Channel Exclusive: “Al Lowe Interview #2!”
Al Lowe: You’re welcome, Tom. It’s nice to be here. I must say I love what you’ve done with the place! <grin> “Loo----king good!”
TK: Do you think you will ever be back in the gaming industry? And if Sierra came begging for you to make a new Larry game, would you do it?
AL: Wait. That’s 2 questions. You know how easily confused I am!
TK: Okay, sorry. First, do you think you will ever be back in the gaming industry?
AL: Of course. Absolutely. Some day. Maybe. Possibly. Who knows? I hope I make myself perfectly clear on this. I don’t know.
Seriously, Tom, it all depends. The kind of game I love to do is adventure games. That’s what I’m good at. My other strength is humor. I have neither the interest nor the desire to make the games that sell today: non-funny non-adventures. And it’s a good thing: I’d suck at it!
TK: And second, if Sierra came begging for you to make a new Larry game, would you do it?
AL: Of course. I left Sierra without burning any bridges behind me. In fact, from a strictly business perspective, I agree with their decision to stop producing adventure games. Adventure sales have been down and dropping steadily, while the costs to produce them keep climbing.
On the other hand, as an adventure game fan, I’m devastated. I can’t believe the company that created graphic adventures now has zero in development!
TK: What do you think makes a good Leisure Suit Larry fan site?
AL: Uniqueness. Not duplicating the other sites that are on the Web. Digging deeply enough to find things of interest to fans.
That’s why http://proxy-mail.mailcity.lycos.com/bin/redirector.cgi?http://www.allowe.com/ contains so few Larry pages and so many links to other sites: you guys have done a great job of covering the games and I refuse to duplicate what you have already done.
TK: What are your comments on Leisure Suit Larry Channel? Do you think the name sucks?
AL: I think it’s the perfect name for a cable TV network! <grin>
TK: What do you think of Sierra's new 'Leisure Suit Larry Ultimate Pleasure Pack'?
AL: I think everyone reading this should rush right over to http://proxy-mail.mailcity.lycos.com/bin/redirector.cgi?http://www.sierra.com/store/quicksheet?SKU=70964 and place their order! Truthfully, I have mixed emotions. I actually requested that Sierra package all my CD-ROM games in one box and call it the Al Lowe Collection instead. (That’s only two more CDs, one for Freddy Pharkas, Frontier Pharmacist and another one for Torin’s Passage.) They didn’t think those two games would increase sales enough to warrant the expense of including the two additional CDs in every box. They’re probably right. But I can’t tell you how many requests I’ve had from visitors to my site asking where and how they could purchase Freddy or Torin. My only response has been “eBay.” I know of no retailer selling those games right now.
TK: What do you think the Leisure Suit Larry Channel needs?
AL: I can’t think of a thing; it’s perfect just the way it is (now that you’ve removed those nude photos of me!).
TK: What do you think of Adventure Gamer?
AL: It’s one of the absolute best sites on the Net for those of us who love adventure games!
TK: What do you think about the LSL New Millennium idea?
AL: (Looking around…) Uh, looks pretty good. Say, didn’t you mention you were going to serve cake?
TK: Besides your book, what are your plans for the future?
AL: I plan to spend time with and enjoy my family, play lots of golf and saxophone, travel, scuba dive, ski, and do all those things I never took time to do when I just had to have the next game out in time for the Holiday shopping rush!
And, after selling humor for all these years, I now plan to give it away! Anyone who sends a blank email to CyberJoke3000-subscribe@eGroups.com will get a free subscription to my daily joke email. What the hell? Even if Sierra won’t produce any more adventure games, at least I can make all of you laugh once a day! (Come to http://proxy-mail.mailcity.lycos.com/bin/redirector.cgi?http://www.allowe.com/ for more details.)
TK: Thank you Mr. Lowe for your time to help us out with your second interview with LSL Channel :-)! I have high hopes for more interviews with you in the future and hope LSL and the other adventure game “heroes and losers” will be unlocked out of their closets at Sierra!
